Steps
The following are the steps I must take in order to have my gastric bypass surgery. I will update this page as I move from step to step.
1. Attend an hour and a half information session, where the lap band procedure will be discussed thoroughly, and I can submit the preliminary paperwork, data and health insurance information
Done! I attended the information session on April 1st, 2008.
2. Meet with a nutritionist who will go over my current health, any health issues (so far, thank goodness, there are none!), goals, and of course, health insurance information
Done! I attended the initial session on March 17th, 2009.
3. Enroll in a six month weight loss management program, which meets for two hours each month
Done! Attended meetings in March, April, May, September, October and November.
4. Take care of pre-op requirements: blood tests, psychological evaluation, exercise evaluation
Done! I had to have a psychological evaluation (done in July 2008) and blood work (done in March of 2009). I also completed my exercise evaluation on April 16th, 2009. Missed blood work was completed on August 27th, 2009, and an updated psychological evaluation was done on August 31st, 2009.
5. Lose 5% of body weight in preparation for surgery.
Done! My starting weight was 331 lbs. I lost 16.5 lbs. by May 22nd, 2009.
6. Meet with surgeon
Done! I met with my surgeon on October 29th, 2009 and again on November 5th, 2009.
7. Take care of any pre-admission testing (not sure what this is or if I’ll even need any).
Done! I met with the anesthesia clinic on November 5th, 2009, and signed all required forms. No pre-admission testing required, since I’m young and healthy (minus the morbid obesity).
8. Surgery
Done! I had gastric bypass surgery on November 18th, 2009.
